The Secret Place
You’ve probably heard of the expression “secret place”. When we are children we have places that we consider safe and hidden, and when it comes to our life with God it is not much different.
God, me and the Secret Place
When we go to the Bible the Lord is very clear to us:
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
“Going into our room” and praying is our Secret, the place we have to develop intimacy with God. It is also our Safe Place where we can rest and be ourselves. Before the Father we can show our worst side, because we know that He will take care of our wounds.
In the Secret Place we can open our hearts
The Word says:
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Luke 5:16
That is, Jesus also had his moments in the Secret with the Father.
When Christ went to Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-36), he was sad and distressed. The moment was near when He would face the cross. He withdrew from the disciples, fell to the ground and prayed to the Father. He asked that, if possible, that moment of pain be taken away from him. In such a difficult situation, in which the worst moment of his life was approaching, Jesus went to a place where he could have a time of prayer alone with God.
Before the Father, the Son did not hide his desire not to go through that suffering. In the same way, when we are before God we can expose our weaknesses, frailties and what we feel. Maybe that’s why we have so much resistance to being silent with God. In the Secret we stay with the One who sees the depths of our hearts and intentions.
The Psalmist talks about this in chapter 139:1-4 – You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
But how wonderful it is that our Father knows us so deeply. Because it is He who can reveal to us behaviors that need to be transformed and guide us along the eternal path. The psalmist closes chapter 139 rightly saying: See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Conclusion
The Secret Place is where we can be with the only one who knows us so deeply and the only one who is able to transform us and guide us through the best paths of life. So, on this day, take a moment to be in the Secret Place. If you can do that right now, enjoy the Father’s presence.
