When the end of the year approaches, we reflect deeply on what has passed and what lies ahead for the next steps.
But to move forward into the new, we must resolve lingering issues that hold us back. So, what are the steps to do this?
Repentance
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:7-9
God gives us second chances. He knows that we, as humans, fail. Regardless of the error, shortcoming, or failure, we must have a sincere heart—toward ourselves, others, and most importantly, God.
This leads us to true repentance and a change of mind. To follow Christ, it is essential that we experience a renewal of our thoughts.
When God is present in our lives, we experience true transformation and live at peace with our past, present, and future, acting with wisdom and discernment.
Humility
“Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.”
Proverbs 18:12
Another important aspect to cultivate as we seek to become more like Christ is to live humbly. Humility comes before honor, while pride leads to a fall.
We must understand who we are in God. When we recognize not only our identity as children but also as servants and learners, it becomes natural to admit that we are small and imperfect. This realization allows us to acknowledge mistakes and assume the position of humble servants.
Humility takes us to great places without the need to step over others or situations to achieve a certain “status.” Nothing we achieve by our own strength is greater than what we gain through God’s grace.
Obedience
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2
Regardless of the outcome, maintain the correct posture. Make decisions based on God’s direction. Even when mistakes occur, the difference is that, being in God, we pray and listen to the Holy Spirit.
There are countless decisions we must make throughout our lives that are not explicitly described in the Bible. However, Scripture tells us that through a mind renewed by the Spirit, we learn how to walk, speak, dress, eat, and relate. A lifestyle built on the Word teaches us even what Scripture does not state explicitly.
For this reason, God often does not give us a direct answer on certain matters because the Bible already contains stories and principles that serve as His voice to guide us, even in the smallest decisions. A Christ-centered lifestyle provides daily direction.
Love
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32
Recognizing mistakes, going back, and asking for forgiveness is an act of love. Likewise, if you were not the one who erred, receiving with gentleness those who failed you is to act like Jesus. He always blesses us when we do what is right.
Acting and reacting with love is the best response. God calls us not only to repentance but also to forgiveness. Understanding that you too make mistakes—and that others will fail you—makes both repentance and forgiveness much lighter to bear.
God sent His Son to die for us, and though we constantly fail Him, He always welcomes us. No matter how many times we fall, His grace and mercy are renewed every single day. This is how we should act toward those around us.
Receive others as Christ received them, and give yourself to them as Christ gave Himself for us.
