Hitching a ride

We don't always drift away from God through major decisions. Most of the time, this distancing happens gradually, through small concessions, distractions, and seemingly harmless choices. It is precisely in these moments that the enemy finds room to act, offering easier, faster, and more comfortable paths than those God has prepared.
Whenever we desire a path that distances us from God, the enemy offers us a ride.
Shortcuts
"Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil."
Matthew 4:1 (NIV)
Immediately after His baptism, Jesus faced temptation in the desert. The devil did not try to lead Him away from God through something obviously evil. On the contrary, he offered shortcuts: satisfying an immediate need, proving His power, and conquering kingdoms without going through the cross.
This continues to be the enemy's strategy. He rarely presents sin as something destructive. Instead, he offers seemingly simpler paths, immediate solutions, and choices that promise comfort without obedience. Every temptation is, in a way, an invitation to trust more in ourselves than in God.
We need to remember that not every easy path is the right path. Often, what seems to accelerate our journey only takes us further from the Father's will.
Small deviations, great distances
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
Drifting away from God usually doesn't happen all at once. It happens gradually. From decisions not made, to those we make in haste, based on our dreams. When we neglect the Word, we allow small attitudes to take the place of communion and, little by little, our heart loses its sensitivity to the Lord's voice.
It is at this moment that the enemy offers his "ride." He convinces us that there's no problem in slowing down our spiritual life, in postponing time with God, or in negotiating small principles. But each small deviation takes us a few steps further from the intimacy we once enjoyed.
Therefore, the Bible calls us to guard our hearts. Before our feet move away from God, our heart has already begun to walk in another direction. Taking care of our inner life is the best way to remain firm on the path the Lord has prepared.
Remain in Christ
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you."
James 4:7-8 (NIV)
The good news is that God never stops calling us closer. While the enemy offers shortcuts that lead to distance, Christ continues to invite every person to remain in His presence. Victory over temptation does not happen merely by saying "no" to sin, but by saying "yes" to communion with God.
The closer we are to the Lord, the more easily we recognize the enemy's traps. Prayer strengthens our discernment, the Word illuminates our steps, and God's presence gives us strength to remain firm, even when invitations arise to follow another path.
Do not get into the car that takes you on a path away from God. No matter how comfortable and beautiful that car and that path may seem, the destination with God is more than we can dream of.
Whenever an opportunity arises that seems to lead you away from God's presence, remember this truth: Christ continues to extend His hand to lead you on the path of life, even if it seems more difficult at first glance. Choose to walk with Him. No shortcut is worth more than remaining in the Father's presence.
