Chapter 27 of the Book of Numbers presents one of the most striking scenes in the Old Testament: a moment in which God Himself affirms the justice of women who dared to stand up for themselves. Amid the preparation of the people of Israel to enter the Promised Land, a story emerges that profoundly reveals the Lord’s care for each of His daughters.
The daughters of Zelophehad (Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah) appear in a context where culture and law favored only men. Even so, they rise up—not in rebellion, but with faith and a sense of justice—showing that God has never been indifferent to female dignity.
Standing up against injustice
“Our father died in the wilderness…. Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
Numbers 27:3–4
The five women knew that, according to the law, they were not entitled to their father’s inheritance. However, they refused to accept silence as an answer. Instead, they went to Moses, the leaders, and the entire assembly to present their case.
This moment reveals something powerful: faith is also about taking a stand. They were not challenging God, but seeking justice according to what they knew was right. Their attitude teaches us that we can bring our cases before the Lord with confidence, knowing that He hears.
God hears, answers, and validates

Faced with this situation, Moses does not make a decision on his own. He takes the case to the Lord, and the divine response is both surprising and full of grace.
God not only listens—He validates. He declares that they are right. In a society where women’s voices were often ignored, God publicly affirms the justice of these women.
Furthermore, He goes beyond their request: He establishes a new law for Israel, ensuring that other women in similar situations would also benefit. This shows that when God acts, He not only resolves the present but transforms the future.
The heart of God
“What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.

What happens in Numbers 27 is not just a legal decision; it is a revelation of God’s character. He does not see His daughters as invisible or secondary. On the contrary, He cares deeply about their dignity, their future, and their place in history.
At a time when women were often treated as property, God establishes a principle of value, identity, and belonging. This points to a God who is just, attentive, and personal.
This truth transcends generations and reaches us today.
The same God who heard Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah continues to hear you—man or woman. He sees your struggles, knows your heart, and cares about your story. Just as He did with the daughters of Zelophehad, He also cares about your future, your dignity, and the place you occupy.
Never doubt: when you stand in faith, God responds with justice.
