What does the Bible teach about success?

What does the Bible teach about success?

I would like to start this text by reminding you of a successful biblical character, that is Joshua, who with the death of Moses, was called to take the leadership of God’s people and lead them to the conquest of Canaan.

This man of God’s task was to lead more than 2 million people in a strange land to war and conquer a new life. In face of such a challenge, we can already say that without God, this would be impossible, but when we have the Lord by our side, success is guaranteed.

Joshua heard God. He was instructed, encouraged and taught by God. So, with him we can learn the secret of the Christian’s success. Read the passage where the Lord speaks to Joshua and encourage him:

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:5-9 (NIV)

Now, let’s go to the 3 biblical orientations that we can take from this passage about success:

1. Trust that God is with you

He will not leave you, much less abandon you. But he will be with you wherever you go.

2. Meditate day and night on the Word of God

Study the Bible carefully, concentrate on what it is saying. Think about it all the time and don’t stop talking about it, so you will not deviate from what is the will of God for your life.

3. Obey God’s word faithfully

We must be careful to follow everything written in the Word of God, without turning to the left or to the right. That way, we will be guarding our ways.

Conclusion

In our daily lives we face many challenges and God knew that we would have to face them. For this we need to be strong and brave, our Father knew how difficult this would be, but He is at our side to encourage us and give us strength just as He did with Joshua.

We can conclude that God is always with us and that our success is in Him. This may not mean success according to the standards of this world. But those who proceed as instructed by the Bible, will succeed according to God’s standards.

God bless you!
