Many times we are afraid of not feeling up to the positions and challenges given to us, we forget who is the God who enables us and thinking about this, today I want to bring in this text biblical truths about our identity and about the One we believe in!
When the Lord called Moses he immediately thought of five reasons to say no and we also sometimes raise these same points as a reason to give up which are described in Exodus 3 through 4.
1. “Who am I?”
Moses thought that God had chosen the wrong person, because he did not feel able to accomplish what was asked of him. It was too much responsibility! Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever thought about giving up something because you thought you couldn’t do it? Then here is God’s answer to that thought: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3.11). No matter who you are, He has chosen you and will be with you.
2. “Who are you?”
Moses realized that he didn’t know God well enough to introduce him to the people, after all God is so great, tremendous and magnificent. How to describe Him? Thoughts like this demonstrate humility, but they cannot be an excuse for us to refuse God’s call to serve him and spread his truth. God’s answer to this thought: “I am who I am” (Exodus 3.14). Our Lord always has been and always will be with those who serve him.
3. “They will not believe me”
Moses was afraid of the people’s reaction, whether they would believe him or approve of him. How often we worry more about the approval of our neighbor than about obeying and pleasing the Lord. God’s answer to this thought: “And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign” (Exodus 4.8). You will only be an instrument, God is the one who will prove who you are.
4. “I don’t speak well, I’m not a good speaker”
Moses thought he depended on his own qualities to impress the people. We must not allow ourselves to be deceived: if God has called us He will enable us through His Holy Spirit. We need only be willing to serve with diligence. God’s answer to this thought: “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say” (Exodus 4:12). It is God who made your mouth and if He is sending you, He will enable you.
5. “It would be better for the Lord to choose someone else”
Moses felt fear and the weight of responsibility, so he wanted to shirk his calling, suggesting that God should choose someone else. However, the Lord has a different calling for each one, so accept the calling given to you and serve God with joy, giving your best. God’s answer to this thought: “Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you” (Exodus 4:14). God has chosen you for this task, he may send a person to assist, but this responsibility is yours.
