Today we are on our second day of the “3 days to get out of procrastination” series, on the first day we reflected on how being anxious and thinking about the whole paralyzes and today we will look for a solution to that. Let’s see, if being anxious and thinking about the whole paralyzes, then we need to deal with one goal or need at a time, but where to start?
What are your priorities?
Do you know what your priorities are? Here is the first step, ask the Lord for wisdom to define what you have the most urgency to accomplish and put it on paper, organizing and visualizing your tasks can help you a lot. Another point is: have goals that are feasible, specific, and easy. What does this mean? Well, feasible is something achievable, something that can be done, specific is something measurable, concrete and objective, and easy is to turn a certain activity into its easiest possible version.
Let’s take some examples… for someone who is not used to running, participating in a marathon is not at all feasible. Working out may be too generic and distant a goal. Walking for two hours may be too difficult a goal. However, walking for ten minutes is something anyone can do, and because it is less of a challenge, it is more likely to work.
Another example is, reading the entire Bible may not be feasible for most people. However, reading five verses becomes achievable, specific, and easy to do. And that is how you will be able to accomplish what you need to accomplish, not by taking steps that your leg can’t handle, but by taking one step at a time, it will help you get out of your comfort zone.
Here we come to one more point… putting off an easy task, makes it difficult. Putting off a difficult task, makes it impossible, that’s a phrase from George Lorimer, an American journalist, author and publisher. Thinking about the complexity of the whole is much more intimidating and frustrating than focusing on just one part. So take the first step without looking at the second.
This same advice is also very helpful for our interpersonal relationships, like marriage, there are so many people who don’t know how to save their relationship anymore, because they want to solve all the hang-ups at once, so they don’t get off the ground. So how about a simple gesture like leaving a note written “I love you” on your pillow? It doesn’t cost anything. Saving a relationship is not about doing miraculous things, expensive restaurants and so on, the simple day to day is essential, before anything else.
Conclusion
So as we have seen here, getting out of procrastination requires taking one step at a time, knowing your priorities, getting organized, taking small steps to get far, rather than taking steps bigger than your leg with a sure fall. In the next text through the life of David, we will see how to build good habits!
So we can say that the first step in overcoming procrastination is to take one step at a time, don’t wait for the perfect moment, because it won’t exist. One day at a time, one task at a time. There is no miracle, but there is a daily change of positioning that we must adopt. Remember:
Everything has its appointed time, and there is a time for every purpose under heaven. There is a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot what has been planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to scatter stones, and a time to gather stones; Time to embrace, and time to depart from embracing; Time to seek, and time to lose; Time to keep, and time to cast away; Time to tear, and time to sew; Time to be silent, and time to speak; Time to love, and time to hate; Time of war, and time of peace.
