Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Genesis 2:7
How good it is to remember how much our existence depends entirely on God. For the human being to live, it was necessary for the Lord to breathe the breath of life.
An inexhaustible breath
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:30-31
It is He who has the power to give us an inexhaustible breath. So often we are stubborn and try to run the journey of life with our own strengths, but they will always be insufficient. We must learn to our hope in the Lord so that we can fly like eagles and walk without getting tired.
To wait on the Lord is to live in union with Him. Even in our humanity we were made to live in communion with God. In Genesis God created us in his image and likeness so that we could live as human beings in perfect union with Him.
There is a very nice quote from CS Lewis’ book that says the following: Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other.
That is why those who wait on Him renew their strength. He gives us the inexhaustible breath of life.
In difficult times, remember to catch your breath in Him
In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
Job 12:10
Job wrote the above verse. Even in moments of deep sadness and difficulty, He did not forget the sovereignty of God and that in His hand is the life and breath of all mankind. Job lost his property, his family, his health, his friends. He went through moments of pain and yes, he suffered in difficult situations, but he did not lose faith in the Lord.
When we forget that the breath comes from God, we try to resolve situations in our own way. We try to catch our breath in other things:
• in material goods and we become materialistic;
• in exaggerated control, working to keep things as they are so that they do not get out of control;
• in anger and revenge, which can make us embittered;
• among many other things.
So, turn to the one who can renew your strength, the only one in whom you can catch your breath and find comfort.
