In today’s text, we are going to talk about the person who generated us, the person who carried us in her womb and the one who was chosen by God to bring us into the world. Yes, our dear and beloved mothers.
But calm down. If you are not a mother, do not leave now. Read the text to the end, as I’m sure we can take a very incredible lesson, for our lives, through our mothers.
Come with us!
What does the Bible say about “mother”?
God attaches great importance to mothers, especially in raising their children. Together with the father, both have the role of caring, protecting and walking their children’s lives in the ways of the Lord. And children have the obligation to respect, obey and honor their parents.
“My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.”
Proverbs 1: 8-9
The mother takes care of her children with her own body and is the second person to know that little, fragile, helpless and so loved being, coming right after God. The mother watches over the good of her children, the affection and shows with love what is right and what is wrong.
To have an idea of how a mother’s love is something strong and deep, the prophet Isaiah compares God’s love to the mother’s love:
“Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.”
Isaiah 49:15
A mother’s love is what comforts us and the care of God through the lives of mothers is very clear.
Great mothers in the Bible
To better understand the importance of mothers in their children’s lives, we want to bring here some names of exemplary mothers in the Bible:
Maria
Mother of Jesus who risked her reputation and everything she had to fulfill God’s purpose in her life. She was called blessed because she had the honor of carrying the Master in her womb and giving birth to our Savior.
Eunice
Eunice was the mother of Timothy (to whom Paul wrote the first and the second to Timothy). She raised her son in the ways of the Lord and always in faith in Jesus.
Jochebed
The mother of Moses, who protected his son from Pharaoh and was rewarded by God. Jochebed’s care for her son’s life was also responsible for the liberation of God’s people.
Simple tribute:
“I want to tell you, Mum
That you’re special to the Lord,
And you are valued in His eyes,
For no one loves you more.
And Mum, I want you to know
How blessed you really are,
For I know that it was never easy,
Those past years were quite hard.
But even through the years gone by,
I believe that God was there,
Reaching out with loving arms,
Though we were unaware.
And He is still beside you
Longing to be a part
Of all the things that interest you,
For you’re special in His heart.
For even in the daily struggles
That seems to be part of life,
The Lord longs to be involved
And fill the void inside.
So Mum, on this Mother’s Day,
I just want you to know
That you were always appreciated
And that Jesus loves you so.”

For you who are not a mother:
Take advantage of this weekend to honor the mothers. As much as we are in times of social distance, use that time to care, love and give gifts in a different way! Mothers are a gift from God in our lives, so we should thank God for their lives and take care of each one of them.
Grace and peace.
