But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22
We are in the third text of the series “Learning about the Fruit of the Spirit”, in which we will delve into what is written in the Bible about the fruit of the Holy Spirit of God, mentioned in the book of Galatians and today our study will be about peace. I would like to start by leaving as a reminder the passage from Romans 8, 6: “The mentality of the flesh is death, but the mentality of the Spirit is life and peace”.
Peace
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
John 16:33
Peace is not characterized by the absence of struggles or circumstantial adversities, but by discernment and emotional control in the face of situations that bring anguish, doubt or fear. This fruit of the Spirit, described in the sacred scriptures, is very different from what the world means by peace, because it is generated by the comfort of the Holy Spirit, by the transformation that we have undergone in accepting Christ as our only savior.
It is by certainty in faith that we face any situation with security and true peace. In the bible there are several reports of characters who went through unimaginable situations, but their faith kept them firm and unwavering. As it is written in Hebrews 11: 32-38, where the writer recalls what Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, went through and by faith conquered kingdoms, practiced justice, reached promises and even closed mouths of lions.
They faced times when they needed discernment and emotional control and by faith in God they had peace, even in the midst of struggles. With that, we can see that the first characteristic of peace is that it comes from the Lord and is a gift from Him to us. As it is written in John 14:27, when Jesus announces his going to heaven to the disciples, he says that he would leave his true peace with them and with us and asks us not to be afraid. Our Savior has already conquered this world and in it we are more than winners.
Another important point to note is that peace promotes unity – communion among brothers – to which we have been called to live. Human nature is to cause war and division, this being the result of sin, but when we invite the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, we are denying our own flesh to seek a life of holiness, with that we must also seek peace that exceeds all understanding and living in harmony with our brothers.
Conclusion
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:15
In conclusion, reinforcement that our peace comes from God and that no matter what you are going through, the Lord is at your side. Our savior, Jesus Christ, has already overcome the world, so, regardless of adversity, we can have peace. Remember also that peace promotes unity and seeks peace with your brothers, be a peacemaker.
