Maybe this is a little different from what you are expecting, but well, here we go. These days I was watching the movie “Cheaper by the Dozen”, a very famous movie that many of you may have seen more than once, about a family that has 12 children. In the movie the family deals with the challenges of everyday life, but with the message of always being united and helping each other.
It is not a Christian movie, but it is a movie that when I finished watching, I felt great peace in my heart, it brought me great joy and a feeling of gratitude. But what does this have to do with time with God? Well, at the end of the movie, I looked out my window and had a moment of reflection and contemplation, thinking about how nice that evening was and thanked Him for all that God has done and for His perfect creation.
Such a moment led me to reflect a bit on what it is to spend time with God. Our father is omnipresent and is with us all the time, he sees everything we do and to talk to him, we just need to be willing to say something, because he is already there. This may sound like something from a futuristic movie where there is someone listening to you all the time, but in fact we already live this and we should enjoy this company more.
Timing your time with God
1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
Do you know the one thing we shouldn’t put time into? On our time with God, for he is with us at all times and in each of these things mentioned in Ecclesiastes 3. Your work is a way to glorify God, the time you spend with your family too or with a friend who needs you and in so many other moments.
The point is, everything we do can and should serve for God’s honor and glory, even our rest. And with this, I would like to ask: do you seek God only on Sundays, in devotional moments or is He present in your life daily at all times? In your day to day actions, would you be comfortable having the Most High physically sitting next to you? Well, if such answers are negative perhaps it is time to re-evaluate what you have chosen to do with your time and in what kind of place you have been walking.
Going back to the story I told earlier, I would watch “Cheaper by the Dozen” knowing that God is watching me, it was a movie that made me reflect on the importance of family and teamwork, important values.
Conclusion
Understanding that God is with you and that you should praise Him all day long and not only during specific moments does not exclude the importance of doing a devotional or going to church, it only increases our awareness that at all times we can and should praise and magnify our Creator and that His glory also shows in the small things of everyday life.
So this week try to do this exercise of talking to God in the simplest daily activities and tasks. He loves you and wants to have a deep relationship with you. Also evaluate if there is space for Him in your activities and in the places you go. Remember that everything we do should be for the honor and glory of the Most High.
