So many feelings are capable of dominating us throughout life, fear, envy, anger, anxiety, sadness, jealousy, love, courage, and so many others. Sometimes we act driven by anger, sometimes by gentleness and calm.
Who has never been anxious, worried or anguished? Fortunately, once in a while we become joyful and happy, even infecting those around us.
Feelings can be intense, and we don’t always feel we have power over them. There are many kinds of feelings, good, bad and those that we cannot define. But in the Bible we find examples and answers to deal with each one of them.
The Bible and feelings
David was often overcome by loneliness during the time he lived in hiding from Saul, but he also had moments of intense joy, such as when the ark of the covenant arrived in Jerusalem. Gideon was first afraid in the face of his challenges, but later showed courage.
Samson was overcome by passion. Elijah was depressed and sad when faced with the consequences of his call, but received an answer from God. Peter was ashamed, afraid and perplexed to see Jesus being arrested, but then became sad and bitter for denying Him.
Well as we can see the Bible has numerous stories that talk about feelings because they are inherent to us human beings.
Self-control
It is not easy to keep our feelings under control, but we serve a Lord who has compassion on us in our weaknesses. He teaches us how to deal with our emotions in His Word and He also left the Holy Spirit to assist us here on earth.
There are feelings that we need to defeat like envy, jealousy, anger, pride, lustful passion, among others. There are also others that we need to cultivate like love, joy, peace, courage, and so many others.
Faced with the circumstances of life it is common for us to have various reactions, but we need to have self-control above anything else. It will not always be possible to immediately change what we feel, but we can control our reaction, the way we will act on a certain situation.
Conclusion
Our God left a very rich material about feelings in the Bible, where we can learn a lot. When you feel something bad, take it to the Lord, ask the Holy Spirit for discernment, before taking any attitude. It is wise to ponder on what ails us, because acting on impulse can bring serious consequences.
