The world seems more colorful between Christmas and the New Year, people tend to be more kind and generous. With this, they leave aside little silly or intrigues because after all, it’s time to party, to rejoice and be united. But it shouldn’t be like this only at this time of year, should it? Today, together with you, I want to reflect about this great generosity that ravishes people at this time and why it doesn’t last the whole year.
The birth of hope itself
Well, I believe that the first point to think about is that Christmas is considered a time of hope, since the birth of hope itself is celebrated, which explains the behavior of many. After all, a birth is something beautiful and that brings joy, of humanity before and after Christ.
Therefore, as much as there are differences of thought regarding the true day when Jesus came into the world, even though we commemorate such an event regardless of the date, it reminds us of our Father’s faithfulness and that in Him our hopes are renewed every day.
And from this I think: If our hope is in a faithful God who sent his son to earth and this brings so much generosity to this period, why doesn’t it last the rest of the year? Our Lord does not become more generous and faithful because of the day of the year, no, he simply is… and we should simply be regardless of the date.
Gifts and reunions
We don’t need to wait a whole year to gather family or friends and have quality time, to give gifts, to bless the lives of others or to choose to reveal the attitudes of someone who has hurt us. In fact, our year would be even better if we did this throughout it. With this, I don’t take away the importance or the brilliance of this time of year, I only consider that we could take this same attitude of generosity to it all.
Unfortunately, with our flaw of memory, what I have been commenting on a lot here, as soon as the new year starts, we go back to the day by day rush and there ends what was beautiful. Patience goes with many tasks and then we no longer have time, nor willingness to make the day of the other better. Commitments are postponed and intentionality in generosity becomes rare, but as I said, it doesn’t have to be that way.
And how to be more generous?
Generosity has to be practiced to become natural. But fortunately, the Bible gives us some recommendations to make generosity a habit, one of them is regularity, so try to always be generous (1 Corinthians 16:2). Also don’t do it out of obligation, because soon it will be a burden, being intentional is different from doing something because you think you should and not because you really want to (2 Corinthians 9:7).
And one of the most important things is to be wise, asking God for wisdom to apply his generosity, it is good to see what is the best way to help before committing yourself, in some cases it may be giving money, or food, or even attention and affection (James 1:5).
Conclusion
Generosity generates incredible results in our lives and in the lives of others, that is, joy both from the giver and the receiver, gratitude for the life of the other, love because it brings people together and so many other blessings from God. So, may we continue to be as generous next year as we are at this moment!
