On a Wednesday I wake up more than calm, enjoying all the peace that those who believe in God should enjoy, until I get to the living room and my mother is making bills with a very worried face, I ask her what happened and she answers me: “I wanted to do so many things, but this month will be tight, we won’t be able to buy the water filter I wanted, or clothes for your brother.
Let’s see, it’s not that we wouldn’t be able to pay the bills we had, but that we wouldn’t be able to buy these necessary things, but they could wait a little longer or be bought in other stores than the ones she wanted. My brother is at the peak of his growth, in puberty, so he won’t stop growing any time soon and soon he would have to buy clothes again, so the better brand clothes she wanted wouldn’t fit for long and he would soon lose them.
The same with the water filter, ours had broken down and we thought about buying a better one that we have wanted for a long time, but the better one is not only better, but something super technological, it comes out with sparkling water, tea, hot water and there are capsules that even make soda. Do we need this? No! Yet we wanted it. We really needed to buy clothes for the teenager that keeps growing and the filter, thinking that water is essential, but it didn’t have to be option “x” and “y”.
The prison of wanting
Now let’s bring this practical example to our life with God God knows my need and your need, better than we do ourselves. He knows the needs of my home and we had already prayed about these things, so worrying about them would solve nothing, after all, the bills were paid, even if in a counted way, we had something to eat and my brother was not walking around without clothes.
Maybe you are thinking: “gee, but the mother in the story was very superfluous”, and here I want to rebuke this thought of yours and remind you that we all fall into the prison of wanting, sometimes there are things that we understand as a necessity and maybe it even is, but not at that moment, nor in that way, after all, being anxious about it wouldn’t make it happen, it would only bring weight and anguish to your heart.
I have a mother who is a wise woman, but even wise mothers and fathers can find themselves longing for things for the family without all that need, after all they always want the best for their children and home. So, think with me, if a wise mother and father want the best for their children, do you really think that God would not want it? He who is a loving, perfect, kind, just and merciful father, surely knows even more what his children need.
Each day is enough of its own evil.
To calm my mother that day I reminded her of the passage in Matthew 6, as well as how God has always been faithful with us, but seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. So don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. You can rest assured that nothing will be added to you by worrying…, or rather, it will be: gray hair and wrinkles. Do your part and give your needs to God, He will take care of everything!
Bible devotional reading:
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
