Why do you follow God?

Why do you follow God?

Have you ever asked yourself “why do you follow God?” Or “why do you do what you do for Him?”

Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. – Jeremiah 9:12-13

A sister of mine in faith asked me that question. I was very thoughtful and had difficulty finding a concrete answer!

Then I started to analyze every area of my life with God and found a serious mistake, which I was making:

I was not looking for God for who He is. But for the things that I knew He could do or something that I wanted Him to do.

It saddened me. I knew it was not the right way to seek God.

The crowd

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. – João 6:26

The crowd had just witnessed the multiplication of bread and fish (John 6: 1-15). However, people were glad to have satisfied their hunger and not to have witnessed the miraculous signs that revealed Jesus’ authority and identity. Sated hunger was only a consequence of the miracle.

Likewise, a need met by God is not the most incredible of God’s actions in our lives. The most incredible thing is that He reveals who He is when He acts in us.

If the crowd had understood who He was, they would hardly have cared about the food. People would worship God and follow Jesus, with the intention of learning more.

The Disciples

Unlike the crowd, Jesus’ disciples were a great example of how to follow Jesus. Throughout their journey, they learned to seek Jesus in the right way.

They were surprised by Jesus’ teachings and decided to seek more of His wisdom. They understood that Jesus was not just a man who had the power to work miracles. But that He was the Son of God and needed to seek more from Him.

The comprehension of who Jesus was, led them to leave their families and everything they had to follow him. They were even persecuted and murdered, all for loving Jesus.

How about you?

I ask the same question again: why have you been following God? For the miracles that He can do? Because of the difficulties you are going through? Or for who He is and because you understand that you need Him?

Conclusion

We need to learn to seek God in the right way. He is worthy of our surrender and all of our devotion.

Think about it. And don’t let your life with God be based on searching for miracles and blessings!
