Interestingly, blessing in the Bible is always closely linked to family and generational prosperity.
Psalm 128 talks about what happens to one who fears the Lord and walks in his ways: v3. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.… v6. May you live to see your children’s children— peace be on Israel.
In this Psalm it is also possible to see that the blessing that is on the one who walks in the ways of the Lord extends to his entire family, from generation to generation.
The Blessing on Abraham’s Family
Abraham was a God-fearing man. He obeyed the Lord’s call to go to another land. Along his way he built altars in worship of God. His main characteristic was his faith.
In Genesis 13:15-16 we see that the blessings upon his life extended to his descendants (v15. “All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.”) and included the promise of a future great offspring that would come from him (v16. “I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.”).
In Abraham’s life it is possible to notice blessings and promises linked directly to the family.
A family that loves Jesus is blessed
How good it is when a family serves God and its members are truly committed to the Gospel, because there are no perfect people or a perfect home. Family, especially marriage, is a place where unequals live together. However, people who submit to the discipleship of Christ will always go on to have a teachable, humble heart that seeks to do the Father’s will. When a husband, wife and children truly love Jesus, they will be in a permanent process of sanctification and improvement.
In the letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul speaks about the constant growth that we have through Christ: And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. – Philippians 1:9-11
For this reason, a life of fearing God consequently generates a blessed family, where its members seek to live the standards of heaven and do the will of the Father. To share my personal testimony, I have recently had so many important snaps about thoughts and behaviors that I need to change. I believe that if I had walked without Jesus, this would not have happened.
Even if you are the only Christian in your household, know that the work of Jesus in your life will surely bear fruit in your family!
Think about your testimony and share!
Think of all that Jesus has already done in your life, for it is impossible to live with Christ without transformation. How have you changed in the way you relate to your family members or spouse? Do you notice anything that has changed in your home since you had an encounter with Jesus? Has your family been restored by the action of the Holy Spirit? Remember God’s blessings and share your testimony to bring hope to more people!
