Switching curses for blessings

I’ve been thinking a lot about how much the words we hear create things within us. I confess that I was never the person but attentive to the way of speaking during my life. When I gave myself to Christ, however, I began to police more about things that came out of my mouth.

I find it most interesting to remember that God created the heavens and the earth declaring things. He did not use his powerful hands and he was not even joking to model some things. All of His power was manifested in matter through His words. “Let there be light”, “Let the earth produce herbs” among other phrases.

Seeing that after creating all these things the Bible says that “God saw that it was good” is clear that through his words the Lord was creating blessings.

The Greek word for “bless” is ευλογεω (eulogeu). That is a mixture between the words “speak” and “make prosperous or happy”. This shows that our speech has the power to create happiness and prosperity around us. But have we used this power only to create good things?

Enough to complain!

One of the evils I see most in the day-to-day among Christians is constant murmuring and pessimism. I get annoyed at thinking how a people who have been chosen to enjoy the riches of the Kingdom of God can live in such a negative way.

At all times we hear about the difficulties, or about life “going”. I also tired of hearing the phrase “I can’t take this life anymore”.

I believe that this murmuring is one of the reasons that many can not see the full joy of Jesus Christ. We have the power to choose the things that come out of our mouths and we use that to complain all the time.

“Nor murmur, as some of them murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.” (1 Cor. 10:10)

Murmuring gives room for the devil to destroy us! If we want to beat him in our day to day, stop complaining is the first step.

Watch your mouth

There are some biblical texts that I want to connect here before continuing this reflection.

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it comes the questions of life. Remove the evil mouth from you, and turn away your perverse lips.” (Proverbs 4: 23-24)

“And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity, so the tongue is among our members, that it defile the whole body, and inflame the course of nature, and is inflamed with hell” (James 3: 6)

“My brethren, it is not fitting that these things should be so: from some spring, out of the same place, springs fresh water and bitter water?” (James 3: 10-11)

In the first text, we see that something that we must do to guard our heart, which is where the questions of life (and not death) come from, is to remove evil from our mouths. When we stop saying things in pessimistic ways, we are protecting our hearts.

As in the second text, it is said that the simple act of speaking is able to contaminate with the whole body with hell.

And in the third, we see that we have the power to create life and create death. Of blessing and of cursing. If we live by the Spirit, it could never be that way.

Beware of what you tell others

It is also important to pay attention to the things we say to the people who live with us. Knowing that the word has a great power, through what we speak we can hurt someone we love.

I do not even need to quote how many phrases we hear every day about not being able to do anything. Phrase that nullify a person’s worth. Or until they destroy hopes and dreams. We must guard against these things and focus entirely on blessing one another.

Words generate deep marks of death or life in people’s souls. So I suggest to all the brothers that they begin to strive to exchange the words of negativism with words of positivism.

Having a grateful heart is one of the things that can most satisfy our Spirit and give us even more intimacy with God.

Begin the day thanking God for the gift of life. Thank the health of your family members. For food on your desk. For the opportunity we can, through Jesus, be called children. At all times, change the murmuring by words of blessing. Replace “it’s hard” with “everything will get better”.

I assure you, by the authority of Jesus, that the peace that surpasses all human understanding comes to your hearts through this little act!
