It’s okay to have feelings

It’s okay to have feelings

We have entered a very important month: Yellow September, a time of greater attention in the fight against suicide. Faced with this, I also saw the need to come and talk about feelings.

No feeling is the arrival

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all”

2 Corinthians 4:17

What we feel is not forever. Any emotion ends or transforms. Be good or bad. And that doesn’t make you smaller.

Several times in my life I have considered myself weak for simply feeling. Maybe because certain feelings can make us vulnerable. Maybe because they can interfere with a lot of things if we don’t focus.

But much of what we go through in life takes us to a much bigger place, to another level with ourselves and with God. Many bad times I went through made me arrive at wonderful places and with a transformed mindset. Because a bad moment is not the finish line, but part of the path.

Feel is necessary

A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world”

john 16:21

The truth is, feelings are normal. Feeling makes us human and needing help to control them makes us children.

When I was 7 years old I broke my arm, just in the summer. It deprived me of a lot of things back then and I thought: “Why do I need to feel pain?”.

I figured it would be easier if the arm didn’t hurt and I didn’t have to deprive myself so much while it healed. But if I didn’t feel it, I wouldn’t respect the waiting time and it wouldn’t heal.

The Feeling teacher

So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy”

John 16:22

Feeling makes us alive.

Sadness teaches us about the healing process and joy shows us the pleasure of gratitude. Between these two feelings there are many others, which are also accompanied by his teachings and which are often part of the necessary path to reach a certain place. But know that feelings are not the end and they don’t make you smaller.

God has feelings, and that could never diminish His power.

For example, in Genesis 6, the text says that because of man’s wickedness, God’s heart was heavy and sad. In Matthew 21, Jesus is angry when he enters the temple and sees that place that should be a house of prayer being disrespected.

Don’t invalidate your emotions

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you”

1 Peter 5:7

Emotions were given by God. Therefore, the wisdom to control them can only come from Him. Otherwise, they end up controlling us. I don’t know what you’re going through, but I want you to know that this isn’t bullshit. Don’t be ashamed or afraid to ask for help.

Talk to your parents, a family member, a leader, a friend. You don’t have to look good overnight. Processes need to exist for us to be shaped.

But the first step needs to be now. You need to turn your attention to your broken arm. He needs time and care to rebuild and, in addition to the people who love you, you have an amazing doctor available at all times to guide you through this delicate moment.
